Dear Mr. Dircks:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has comple ed an analysis of the prompt alert and notification system for the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station in Brookfield Township, Illinois. This review has been completed pursuant to FEMA rule 44 CFR 350; selected evaluative criteria and Appendix 3 in NUREG-0654/ FEMA-REP-1, Rev. 1; and FEMA-43, the " Standard Guide for the Evaluation of Alert and Notification Systems for Nuclear Power Plants." The enclosed report entitled "LaSalle Nuclear Power Station Site-Specific Offsite Radiological Emergency Preparedness Alert and Notification System Quality Assurance Verification," summarizes the engineering design review, incorpo-rates the results of the telephone survey of the public which was conducted immediately following the alert and notification system activation on December 4,1984, and includes the results of the review of the other applicable evaluative criteria from NUREG-0654/ FEMA-REP-1, Rev.1, and FEMA-43.

Based on the aforementioned review and the results of the alert and notification system activation, FEMA has determined that the prompt alert and notification system installed around the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station meets the specific design requirements of NUREG-0654/ FEMA-REP-1, Rev.1 and FEMA-43, and that there is reasonable assurance that the system is adequate to promptly alert and notify the public in the event of an accident at the site. The caveat on the alert and notification system contained in the 44 CFR 350 approval for LaSalle dated June 4,1982, is now removed. Governor James R. Thompson of Illinois will be advised of this approval.

i Sincerely, c _ ~~ 0 & W 7
