Dear Mr. Keppler:

. On August 9,1983, Mr. S. J. Brewer of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). This item concerns inadequate penetration (effective throat) of flare bevel welds. This condition may affect numerous cable tray supports constructed to date. If the tube steel to support welds of these cable tray supports have inadequate penetration, the welds may not be able to withstand their design basis loading.

PSI is currently working to establish the scope and severity of the problem. At this time it appears to affect 1200-1400 supports. After the scope and severity have been quantified, PSl will determine any necessary corrective action.

This letter is intended to fulfill the thirty (30) day reporting requirement of 10 CFR 50.55(e) and is considered an interim report.

A further report will be filed on or before December 9,1983. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at your convenience.
