Subject:

Response to Inspection Report 50-482/79-04

Dear Mr. Seidle:

This letter is written in response to Mr. Seyfrit's letter of April 11, 1979, which transmitted Inspection Report 50-482/79-04. As requested, the finding is being addressed in three parts:

? .. .

a) Corrective steps which have been taken and the results achieved, b) Corrective steps which will be taken to avoid further ncn-ccepliance, and c) The dates when full compliance will he achieved.

Finding Tempe ra tures in the concrete lab curing reca fell helcw the ASTM C-31 mininca tolerance of 70.40 F for three pericds of time and the recorder failed to record temperature data for one peried of time, as listed belew, and Ncnconfc=ance or Deficiency Re x:rts were not initiated.

Pr. W.C. Seidle May 11, 1979 Rescanse a) A review of the terperature recording charts beginning Decerber 5, 1977 through March 16, 1978, revealed that in two of the instances listed above it appears the inspector read the wet bulb temperature and not the dry bulb temperature, which was within acceptable limits. The chart for recember 20, 1977 did indicate the dry bulb temperature was slightly (2 F)0 belcw the

. minimum for about 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
. It was also confirmed that for a period of time during the 1978 New Years holidays the recorder pens failed to write. These two occurrences have been documented on !!onconfo=ance Report 1S!!C90CC, which is being processed according to established procedures.

A review of other nonconformance reports generated because of curing room problems indicates that an excessive nu-ber of temperature control problems have occurred.

, b) QC Personnel responsible for monitoring te=peratures in the concrete laboratory curing room have been instructed to initiate a Deficiency Report immediately upon finding the curing room terperature out of tolerance. Also, before leaving for a holiday or weekend, the recorder is,to be checked for an adequate ink supply.

An engineering evaluation of the curing reem environmental control equipment and its maintenance is being made. Replacement of parts ,

modification of the system and/or increased raintenance will be done as necessary to improve the control system's reliability.

c) The abcVe acticns are expected to be cceplete by August 15, 1979.

Please advise if you need addicional infc=ation.

Yours very truly,

, h 4
