U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission CPPR-170 Region III CPPR-171 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Marble Hill Nuclear Generating Station Units 1 & 2

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On January 22,1980, Mr. S. 3. Brewe. of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc.

(PSI) telephoned your office to notify you of a potentially reporta'le incident as required by 10CFR50.55(e). Due to high winds, the 4600 Ringer Crane boom swung around and collided with the Unit 2 containment liner. Visual inspections of the liner have revealed a 4" long by 1" deep tear in the outside flange of the uppermost liner stiffener but no apparent damage to the tack welds between the liner and stiffener or the liner plate itself.

PSI presently has their architect-engineer and liner supplier investigating the extent of this damage and what effect it may have on liner integrity. The results of this investigation will be evaluated to determine whether repair work will be necessary.

This letter is intended to fill the requirements of an interim report as defined in 10CFR50.55(e). A final report will be filed April 21,1980.

Sincerely, S. W. S'leids
