f Re f: Letter of 4/10/81 from Office of Inspection and Enforcement, NRC to KG&E

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

The referenced letter required action from Kansas Gas and Electric Company in regard to IE Bulletin 81-03.

The subject of IE Bulletin 81-03 concerned flow blockage of cooling water to safety syster, components by Corbicula sp. (asiatic clam) and Mytilus sp.

(mussel) , and *.equested certain actions by Licensees and Permit Holders.

The following information is provided in response to your letter. The items below are nunbered to match the Bulletin action items.

1) Requires Construction Permit Holders to respond to Items 1) and
4) for OL's:
1) In the State of Kansas, Corbicula has been collected at only two locations. The first collection was in a cove on Wilson Reservoir in 1980. Wilson is located in north-central Kansas, and is built on the Saline River, a tributary of the Kansas Rive r. The ether collection was on the Kansas River near Bonner Springs in early 1981. This collection yielded only

$h[

two juvenile Corbicula specimens. The State Biological Survey I was responsible for both Corbicula collections.

//

The ecological monitoring around the Wolf Creek Generating Station has not revealed Corbicula to be present in the Neosho River between John Redmond Reservoir and Leroy, or in Wolf Creek. The monitoring has been conducted since 1973 and will continue at least two years past the initiation of plant operation.

Mr. Karl V. SOyfrit KMLNRC 81-096 July 9, 1981 The possibility of Corbicula spreading throughout the State was discussed with Don Huggins, aquatic biologist for the State Biological Survey. He wcs certain that in time Corbicula would become established in the major river drainages of Kansas; however, the time involved would be variable, depending upon the conditions.

Mytilus sp. is a marine mussel and thus would not occur in the fresh water of Wolf Creek Cooling Lake.

4) The monitoring program, as stated in 1) above, will continue at least two years past the initiation of plant operation.

When Corbicula have been detected in the source water, a decision will be made as to what measures will be used for preventing and detecting flow blockage due to their presence.

.%e areas of nost concern are piping with diameters less than 1.5 inches, which include containment cooler tubes, turbine oil coolers, radiation detection monitor piping, drain and relief valves.

The measures that will be considered include:

a) Monitoring flow tnrough coolers once per month to check for decreasing flow over a period of time; b) Pumping 1700 F water through the piping for about half an hour; c) Manually cleaning the service water side of coolers at least once per year; d) Chlorination of water for those systems which have temperature limits on water to be pumped through them; and e) Manually cleaning the circulating water intake bays once per year due to Corbicula attraction to probable silt accumulation there.

2) This item is not applicable.
3) See response to 1) above.

Yours very truly, GLK:bb Y
