Rhode Island Atornic Energy Commission NUCLEAR SCIENCE CENTER South Ferry Road Narragansett, R.I. 02882 1197 December 8, 1987 Mr. Lester S. Rubenstein U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Standardization and Special Projects Directorate Division of Reactor Projects III, IV, V and Special Projects Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, DC 20555 License 50-193 Docket R-95

Dear Mr. Rubinstein:

Please refer to our letter of harch 23, 1987 which submitted our proposed schedule for conversion of the Rhode Island reactor from High Enriched Uranium to Low Enriched Uranium fuel. In that letter the expected date for the submission of the application for authorization to convert was January 4, 1988.

I Because of the difficulties encountered in converting using the standard fuel plate, it has not been possible to maintain the schedule originally proposed. We therefore respectfully request a six-month extention of the January 4, 1988 date to July 5, 1988.

Thank you for your consideration.

Very truly yours, f '
