f The purpose of this letter is to clarify our evaluation of the core shroud at the Peach Bottom I Atomic Power Station (PBAPS), Unit 3. In our letter dated November 3,1995 (G. A.

Hunger, Jr. (PECO Energy Company) to USNRC), PECO Energy Company provided a i

summary of core shroud inspection results for the inspection of the PBAPS, Unit 3 core shroud which was performed during the PBAPS, Unit 3 tenth refueling outage (3R10, i September,1995). These inspectior)s were performed in accordance with Generic Letter 94-03, dated August 24,1994 ("Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking of Core Shrouds in Boiling Water Reactors"). As discussed in the summary portion of the November 3,1995 letter, the results of the inspections and evaluations concluded that the condition of the PBAPS, Unit 3 shroud, projected through a minimum of the next two operating cycles, will support the required safety margins. In your letter dated January 29,1996 (J. W. Shea (USNRC) to G. A. Hunger, Jr. (PECO Energy Company)), you provided a safety evaluation for our response to Generic Letter 94-03 for PBAPS, Unit 3. This letter stated that the PBAPS, Unit 3 core shroud is acceptable and that the licensee's evaluation results justify omration of PBAPS, Unit 3 for the next operating cycle. For the upcoming PBAPS, Unit 3 e eventh refueling outage (3R11, currently scheduled to begin in the late September or early October,1997 time frame), the PBAPS, Unit 3 core shroud is not scheduled for weld examination. This schedule is supported by the BWRVIP reinspection guidance

(" Guidelines For Reinspection Of BWR Core Shrouds," BWRVIP-07, dated February {r 1996). The PBAPS, Unit 3 core shroud has been evaluated to be within the required safety margins for a minimum of the next two operating cycles (until 3R12, currently scheduled to l begin September,1999) as discussed in our November 3,1995 letter.
