| | ==Dear Mr. Keppler:== |
| | |
| | On August 17, 1982, Commonwealth Edison Company notified |
| | ! Mr. R. C. Knop of your staf f of a potential problem with the LaSalle County Station Unit 2 Electrical Penetration Assemblies. The purpose of this letter is to provide an interim report in accordance with the provisions o f 10 CFR 50.55(e) . |
| | 4 Description o f Deficiency Each Electrical Penetration Assembly contains seven (7) round " epoxy" modules through which extra flexible cables are fed. |
| | The extra flexible cables were butt spliced by the manufacturer (Bunker Ramo) to seven (7) strand cables on both the inboard and outboard sides of the penetration. |
| | Based on problems experienced by Consumers Power Company at their Midland Plant, a sample of four (4) butt splices which connected #2 AWG cables was tested. Two o f the four splices f ailed to meet the 180 lb. pull-out force indicated in Underwriters Laboratories Standard UL 486A. The butt splice connecting the two |
| | #2 cables was uninsulated, indent-crimped once for each cable and stamped "2 - AIR " . Inspection of splices which connected #6 and #10 cables indicated the same configuration, i.e. an extra flexible cable spliced to a seven (7) strand cable. These butt splices were also uninsulated, indent-crimped once for each cable and stamped "6- AIR " (for #6 AWG) and "6 9YSB12 10" (for #10 AWG). No pull tests have been performed on either #6 or #10 cables at this time. |

| | process of determining what additional testing is required on the splices. Discussion has been conducted with: Consumers .Powe.r Company, who have the same problem at Midland; Burndy, the manufacturer of the butt splices; ANCO Engineering, .which1 acquired the product rights and document' a tion' from Bunker Ramo when the Amphenol Sams Division went out o f the penetration business. 'At present, no decisions have been made concerning the scope of the, additional testing. . |
| | Schedule , |
| | i Commonwealth Edison anticipates completi.on of test'ing in approximately three (3) months. Region III will receive a final report or updated schedule on or about December 27, 1982. |

Dear Mr. Keppler:
On August 17, 1982, Commonwealth Edison Company notified
! Mr. R.
The butt splice connecting the two
- 2 cables was uninsulated, indent-crimped once for each cable and stamped "2 - AIR " .
