Special Report on Fire Detection Zone 1-31 LaSalle County Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 Facility Operating License NPF-11 NRC Docket No. 50-373 This Special Report is submitted in accordance with LaSalle County Station Unit 1 Operating License NPF-11, Appendix A, and Technical Specifications 3.3.7.9 and 6.6.C.

Technical Specification 3.3.7.9 requires, as a minimum, the fire detection instrumentation for each fire detection zcne of Unit 1 shown in Table 3.3.7.91 shall be OPERABLE whenever the equipment protected by the fire detection instrument is required to be OPERABLE, and requires the restoration of the instruments to OPERABLE status within 14 days of being declared inoperable.

On May 22,1998, Fire Detection Zone 1-31 had been out of-service for a period greater than 14 days. Fire Detection Zone 1-31 was taken out-of-service on May 8,1998 to prevent false alarms during hot work

activities (i.e., welding, cutting, and grinding) associated with L1F35

/d modification work to support restart. Fire Detection Zone 1-31 is located on

elevation 673' of the Unit 1 Reactor Building I

A fire watch was established in accordance with Technical Specification 9,7 Action Statement 3.3.7.9.a. to inspect the affected areas while the fire detection instrumentation was inoperable. The fire watch ensured detection capability was available to minimize potential damage to safety related equipment while the fira detection instrumentation was inoperable. Fire Detection Zone 1-31 was returned to an OPERABLE status on May 28,1998.
