Dear Sir or Madam:

Per the requirements of :10CFR Part 21, Sulzer Bingham pumps Inc. (formerly Bingham-Willamette Co.) advises of a defect ,

condition on a basic component supplied to Commonwealth Edison LaSalle Units 1 and 2.

1 -The condition was first observed on the Reactor Recirculation  :

L pumps ini Unit 1A upon- a - maintenance disassembly during ,'

February:of 1987. The defects observed were axial cracks in the~ pump = shaft in the region immediately above_ the impeller.

Subsequent _ disassembly of the remaining- three (3) Reactor *

,. Recirculation pumps revealed similar conditions. The defects +

L .did not constitute a shaft failure.

Metallurgical evaluation indicated the most common cause of g ' crack growth as. thermal fatigue. At present the root cause of the thermal cycles which appear to be ' producing the cracking is not known.

The 'following list . represents the locations of reactor recirculation pumps supplied with this material.
