Special Report on Loose Parts Monitor System (LPMS)

Channel 5 LaSalle County Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 Facility Operating License NPF-11 w

NRC Docket No. 50-373 This Special Report is submitted in accordance with LaSalle County Station Unit One Technical Specifications 3.3.7.12 and 6.6.c.

Technical Specification 3.3.7.12 states the loose-part detection system shall be OPERABLE in OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS 1 and 2. This Technical Specification also requires with one or more loose-part detection system channels inoperable for more than 30 days, a Special Report be prepared and submitted to the Commission, pursuant to Specification 6.6.c, within the next 10 days, outlinirig the cause of the malfunction and the plans for restoring the channel (s) to OPERABLE status.

On August 11,1998, Channel 5 (1 A Reactor Recirculation Suction) of the Loose Parts Monitor System (LPMS) became INOPERABLE. The failure is believed to be the channel's pre-amplifier, located inside the Primary Containment at the inboard side of electrical penetration E-19. A station Action Request was written to initiate repairs on the channel. Since the suspected failed part is located within the Primary Containment, the repairs and resultant testing to return the channel to OPERABLE status will be scheduled for the next Unit One refuel outage, L1R08.
