Subject:

LaSalle County Station, Unit 2 10CFR50.55(e) Notification 83-02 Final Report, SOR, Inc. Pressure Switches NRC Docket No. 50-374

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Commonwealth Edison notified your office on February 16, 1983 o f a deficiency in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e) concerning a significant deviation from performance specifications for the SOR, Inc. pressure switches installed as part of the ECCS interlock modification. The GE part number for these switches is #219B4965P004.

Eight switches were installed on Unit 1 as part of the delta P interlock modification late in 1982. Af ter hydrostatic test of Unit 1, four of the eight experienced failure due to the 0-ring seal allowing water to enter the electrical portion of the device. Further testing by the station on the eight Unit 2 devices (not installed) yielded two additional switches which had the apparent inability to seal at reactor pressure (1120 PSI). These additional eight were tested on nitrogen, not water.

GE has been working with SOR to determine cause of failure.

Determination to date indicates that the 0-ring material used in the failed pressure switches did not have sufficient curing. We anticipate a failure report to be issued by SOR, Inc. in early April.

All of the leaking 0-rings have been replaced with new 0-rings under the direction of a SOR field representative. The SOR Pressure Switches were then tested and found to have no leakage.

s' J. G. Keppler March 16, 1983 From the above, we conclude that the plant is operable because the SOR Pressure Switches in the ECCS systems have been tested and performed as required.

If you or your staf f have any questions concerning this problem please contact us at this office.
