HA'ICH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 2 NOTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL PROBLEM REGARDIIG THE 10 CFR 50.49 BQUIPMENP QUALIFICATION DEADLINE Gentlemen:

In accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49(h), Georgia Power Ccrapany (GPC) hereby provides notification of equignent qualification problems which could result in a request for extension of the rulemaking deadline (i.e., end of the seccad refueling outage after March 31, 1982).

The problems being encountered involve certain installed electrical components of the control system for the High Pressure Coolant Injection (HICI) system turbine at Plant Hatch Unit 2. These problems were first discovered by GPC on August 25, 1983.

The equipment items involved and the current status of GPC qualification efforts for each item are as follows:

1. Woodward Magnetic Pick Up, Part No. 1680-622; and Woodward Hydraulic Actuator Part No. R8250-133.

GPC is currently in the process of obtaining qualification test data from Wyle Labs. The schedule for completion of the qualification analysis for the Hatch components cannot be finalized until this information has been obtained, which should be sometime within the next four weeks.

2. HPCI Turbine Auxiliary Oil Pump Motor, Vacuum Punp Motor, and Condensate Pump Motor.

GPC is currently in the process of obtaining qualification test data from Terry Turbine. The schedule for completion of the qualification analysis for the Hatch components cannot be finalized until this information has been obtained, which should be sometime within the next six weeks.

Upon receipt of the appropriate information from Wyle Labs and Terry Turbine, GPC will perform a Plant Hatch specific qualification analysis for the specified components. Should GPC make a determination that any of these equipment items either cannot be environmentally qualified using the existing data or the qualification analysis cannot be completed prior to the rulemaking deadline, then GPC will subnit a request for extension of the deadline as prescribed by 10 CFR 50.49(g) .
