Gentlemen:

SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-413/87-31 AND 50-414/87-31

Thank you for your supplemental response of December 11, 1987, to our Notice of

Violation issued on October 19, 1987, concerning licensed activities conducted

at your Catawba facility. After reviewing your response, a telephone

conversation was held on January 11, 1988, between the Catawba Station Health

Physicist and the inspector to clarify changes that you stated 16 your response

would be made to your Station Directive 3.8.3 and related documents, signs and

training programs. It is our understanding that a hands and feet frisk will be ,

required at the nearest available frisker of those individuals exiting a

containination area when the S/RWP they are Working under requires the removal

of their outer clothing and use of personnel protective clothing.while in the

contaminated area. A whole body frisk will thereafter be required of those

individuals when they reach the contaminated side of the Change Rooms.

We have evaluated this response and found that, with the clarification, it i

meets the requirements of 10 CFR 2.201. We will examine the implementation of

your actions to correct this viciation during future inspections.

I

We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely.
