The purpose of this letter is to provide a revised status of the Crosby SRV Solenoid Valve 10 CFR 50.55(e) report.
As described in Reference (b), the final resolution to the Crosby Solenoid Valve qualification problem was pursued in parallel paths; one included modification of the collet / yoke assembly which resulted in the Crosby Model IMF-2 solenoid that has a qualified life per NUREG 0588 Cat. II of over 10 years.                          That model solenoid was installed on Unit 1 and will be initially installed on Unit 2 at LaSalle. The other path was the development of a long-term solenoid without active elastomer parts but with a weld-sealed body.                          This long-term solenoid potentially has lifetimes of 20 to 40 years.
The qualification of this Crosby solenoid has not been completed because of difficulties in establishing the seal at the electrical cable entry into the solenoid body.                      Testing is still progressing at the vendor's development laboratory.                          It is unlikely that this long-term solenoid will be ready for the initial installation on Unit 2, hence recourse was made to the IMF-2 solenoid for original installation on Unit

Keppler                                                March 30, 1983 The purpose of this letter is to closecut the 10 CFR 50.55(e) report which related to the original solenoids (pre-IMF-2's) that had the under voltage problem. Closure is based upon the fact that the IMF-2's corrected the undervoltage problem and that they are qualified per NUREG 0588 for sufficient lifetime to operate beyond the first two fuel cycles.
A secondary purpose is to update Reference (d) to assure the Commission that qualified solenoids are utilized on LaSalle 2 safety relief valves even though the planned long-term (40 year) solenoids are still in developmental testing. The EQ Binder (EQ-LS-041) at the station contains the detailed maintenance and surveillance requirements to assure the retention of qualified solenoids on these safety relief valves.
All  IMF-2 solenoids have the qualified collet / yoke assembly installed in    them, hence the closure of the undervoltage concern. This modification    and the manufacturer's testing to IEEE 323 (1971) qualifies these valves    for plant operation under NUREG 0588 Cat. II standards.
