SUMMARY

OF SITE AUDIT RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR KEWAUNEE POWER STATION (TAC NO.

MD9409)

During October 21 and 22, 2008, a team of three reviewers from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) participated in a preliminary site audit at the Kewaunee Power Station (KPS). The audit was related to the environmental review of the KPS license renewal application.

The primary goals of site audits are to review documentation, gather information to ensure that environmental requirements of license renewal as codified in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 51 (10 CFR Part 51) are met, and to interface with officials in State government agencies to obtain related information. However, the goals of this preliminary site audit were for the three NRC reviewers to tour KPS general vicinity and gain familiarity with the ecological, historical, and cultural resources in the area. The audit did not include on-site tours of KPS facilities. The preliminary audit was scheduled to occur in October 2008 because a full audit was planned for January 2009, when the weather conditions would likely prevent access to the necessary sites.

During the preliminary site audit, the three NRC reviewers toured the general vicinity of KPS and gained familiarity with the ecological, historical, and cultural resources in the area. Two of the reviewers took a boat tour of the KPS discharge outlet and the Lake Michigan coast in the vicinity of KPS, a tour that would not be possible during the scheduled January 2009 audit.

Enclosed is a list of NRC and Dominion Energy Kewaunee, Inc. representatives who participated in the October 2008 preliminary site audit.

While the review team did not identify any significant issues during its preliminary site audit, the team indicated that the environmental review was ongoing and that any additional information necessary to support the review would be formally requested.
