Point Beach, Unit'1 Notification of an Unusual Event Two Rivers, WI 54241 Alert Docket No 50-266 Site Area Emergency General Emergency xx Not Applicable Subjcet: IODINE RELEASE INSIDE CONTAINMENT Airborne iodine releases occurred inside containment on November 2-3, 1983, during steam gtnerator replacement work. The inaxitnum rneasured iodine concentrations were 0.5'MPC (maximum permissible concentration)' on November 2 and 22 MPC on November 3. Both releases coincided with cutting operations on the main coolant piping. Workers within containment were evacuated on both occasions.

Whole body counting will be performed to evaluate personal uptakes. Due to the evacuations and use of respiratory equipment, it is unlikely that any uptakes in excess of regulatory limits occurr,,d.

Vantilation exhaust from the containment is filtered to remove particulates and iodines brfore release to the environment. Preliminary atuations show that no regulatory release limits were exceeded.

Two region based specialists were dispatched to the site on November 3 to review this matter. The resident inspector is also following the licensee's actions.
