OUTAGE FOR PUMP REPAIR AND OTHER MAINTENANCE On February 18. 1997. Unit 1 was shut down because of a possible problem with the impeller of a Component Cooling Water (CCW) pump and a bearing problem with a Service Water (SW) pump motor.

Inspections and repairs of the CCW pump and the SW pump motor were completed on February 24 but the unit remained shutdown for additional maintenance activities, including verification of operability of a Residual Heat Removal system check valve. Unit 2 is shut down for refueling and steam generator replacement.

On February 25. Unit 1 left cold shutdown in preparation for restart. As of March 3. the startup continues to be delayed, however, pending resolution of a potential bearing problem on the G03 emergency diesel generator (EDG) (Unit 1 Train B). The G04 EDG (Unit 2 Train B) was taken out of service due to a generator outboard bearing problem. The licensee's initial review indicates that the G04 bearing damage (fluting) was caused by the flow of electrical current through the bearing assembly. Although no bearing degradation has been noted on G03 to date, the licensee is reviewing the potential for a similar problem with G03.
