PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-III-85-57 Date July 12, 1985 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without veri-fication or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the staff on this date.

Subject:

DISCHARGE OF FIREARM BY SECURITY OFFICER On July 12, 1985, the licensee reported that a 9 millimeter rifle had fired as it was being handled by a security guard in the auxiliary building. The incident occurred at 12:45 p.m.

There were no injuries and no equipment damage. There is no safety-related equipment in the area where the incident occurred, according to the licensee.

The licensee's preliminary investigation has determined that the security guard unlocked a storage locker containing two weapons (shotgun and rifle) and other equipment. The weapon was removed from the locker, a round moved into the chamber, and the weapon fired. Exact circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the licensee. Region III (Chicago) has dispatched a security inspector to monitor the investigation.

The security officer has been suspended pending the investigation results. The security officer has been a licensee employee for about eight years. The officer was considered a "model employee," except for an incident 6 months ago when he was disciplined for sleeping on duty. The licensee stated there was no evidence of any aberrant behavior by the employee due to medical, financial, marital, or other reasons.

Th2 Information Assessment Team representative has been advised of the incident.

S::nior Resident Inspector is monitoring the licensee's immediate actions pertaining to the incident.

The State of Wisconsin will be notified.

Region III (Chicago) was notified of the incident at 1:15 p.m., July 12, 1965. This information is current as of 1:00 p.m. (CDT), July 15, 1985.
