1 Facility: Point Beach Unit 1 (Wisconsin Michigan Power Company)

Subj ect: REFUELING OUTAGE BEGUN 10 DAYS EARLY DUE TO GENERATOR BEARING 1 DAMAGE FOLLOWING REACTOR TRIP l 1

A reactor protective system instrument power bus breaker trip on 11/16/75, which caused a reactor tri}. and initiated safety injection, also caused a loss of portions of the gen 3rator bearing oil lubrication system. The loss of bearing lubrication resOlted in damage to several generator bearings.

Unit I was scheduled to shutdown for refueling 11/28/75.- Due to the .

necessity for replacement of several generator bearings, licensee management E elected to go into the refueling outage at this time. There was no damage to the nuclear steam supply systezi as a result of the trip, and no releases

( of radioactivity occurred due to the event.

A company news release was made 11/17/75 regarding the cause of the reactor trip on 11/16/75.

The resident inspector will conduct routine followup on this event.

i Region III received notification of the reactor trip and possible generator bearing damage on November 17 and confirmation of bearing damage and the resultant early refueling outage on November 19, 1975.

Both notifications were by telephone from G. Reed, Plant Manager.
