Point Beach Unit 1 Notification of an Unusual Event Two Rivers, WI 54241 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No: 50-266 General Emergency Not Applicable

Subject:

TWO STUCK CONTROL RODS (UPDATE) '

During an inspection of Control Rods F-12 and J-4 with the reactor vessel head removed, the licensee determined that both control rods were stuck as a result of work performed on the control rod drive system during the current refueling outage.

Control Rod F-12 stuck 60 inches above the bottom of the core on May 30, 1985, because a broken piece from a guide tube insert had lodged in the control rod guide tube. -

Rod J-4 stuck 99 inches from the bottom May 30 because a guide tube alignment pin (split pin) had lodged itself in the guide tube. All guide tube inserts and split pins had previously been modified as a result of problems with this equipment.

Th3 licensee plans to remove and inspect all guide tube inserts and all guide tube internals. The unit is expected to remain shut down until June 18, 1985.

Region III (Chicago) and the resident inspectors have been monitoring the licensee's course of action.

The State of Wisconsin will be notified.
