The infonnation is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN LONGER THAN 48 HOURS Florida Power and Light (FPL) manually tripped St. Lucie Unit 2 from 100 percent power at 7:12 p.m. (EDT) yesterday because of excessive vibration in a reactor coolant pump and a loose parts monitor alann in that same cooling loop.

Unit 2 had returned to power operation on September 10 after primary seals had been replaced on all reactor coolant pumps, and following repairs to the oil seal of the same reactor coolant pump in which vibrations have now been detected (PN0-II-85-85, issued August 26).

FPL is placing the unit in cold shutdown. Investigation of the problem and necessary repairs are expected to require several days. St. Lucie Unit 1 is operating at 99 percent power.

FPL is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The State of Florida has been informed.

FPL notified the NRC headquarters incident response center of this occurrence by telephone at 8:48 p.m. yesterday. This information is current as of 11:30 a.m. today.
