June 1, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-94 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

TURBINE GENERATOR FAILURE 1

At 3:50 p.m. on May 31, 1977, with the reactor operating at 100% power I there was a failure in the turbine generator exciter and the reactor tripped as a result of a momentary loss of voltage. All safety-related systems functioned properly. Initial inspection indicates that the )

l exciter experienced some physical damage; however the full extent or cause of the damage is not presently known. I 1

The unit is expected to be down at least 3 or 4 days for inspection and repair.

No further IE action is planned.

FP&L is not presently planning a press release.

C Region II received notification of this occurrence from an IE inspector /

onsite at 9:30 a.m. on June 1,1977. #
