SUBJECT:

EXTRANEOUS LIQUID AND RESIN FOUND IN RADWASTE SHIPMENT On February 19, 1980 a shipment of spent resin from St. Lucie Unit I arrived at the Barnwell Waste Disposal Site. During routine surveillance, 18 gallons of liquid ccataining some resin were discovered at the bottom of the shipping cask after the liner was removed. No radiochemical analysis of the liquid or resin was performed. The mixture of liquid and resin was handled as radioactive waste, solidified by Chem-Nuclear Sytems, Inc. , at Barnwell, and buried at the site.

The source of liquid and resin 'in the cask has not been confirmed; howeser, the li(ensee stated the shipment was loaded in the rain and was slightly over-filled during loading.

Media interest is not expected. Neither the State of South Carolina, the licensee, nor the NRC plans a news release.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence from the State of South Carolina at 3:00 p.m. on February 25, 1980. This information is current as of 8:00 a.m. on February 26, 1980.
