GULF STATES UTILITIES COMPANY P O S T O F F I C E 8 0 X 2 9 51 .SEAUMoNT. TEXAS 777o4 AREACoDE 409 838-6631 May 13, 1987 RBG- 25939 File No. G9.5 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-Gentlemen:

River Bend Station - Unit 1

-Docket No. 50-458 As reflected in Supplement No. 5 of the Nuclear Regulatory.

Commission's (NRC) Safety Evaluation Report (NUREG-0989)~related to the operation of River Bend Station (RBS), Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) committed to submit for NRC approval a turbine system maintenance program based on the manufacturer's calculations of missile generation probabilities.

General Electric Company (GE), the manufacturer of the RBS turbines, has completed a probabilistic evaluation of the low pressure turbines at RBS. The results of GE's turbine missile generation probabilities which are based upon the methodology of the proprietary GE report " Probability of Missile Generation in General Electric Nuclear Turbines" are reflected in attached Tables 1 through 5. The proprietary GE report (methodology) was submitted under Docket No. 50-354 (Hope Creek) and reviewed and found acceptable by the NRC for use in establishing maintenance and inspection schedules for turbine systems. This is reflected in the NRC's SER, Supplement No. 6, Appendix U related to the operation of Hope Creek.

Based on the attached results and GE recommendations, GSU has revised the turbine inservice inspection program as reflected in the RBS Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR), Section 10.2.3.6. Attached for your review and approval is the revised description of the turbine inservice inspection program (FSAR Section 10.2.3.6) which will be included in a future RBS FSAR update.

This submittal satisfies the NRC's requirement in the RBS SER to provide a GE analyses of turbine missile probabilities at RBS and the CSU commitment to submit to the staff for approval before November 1, 1987 a turbine system maintenance program based on these probabilities.
