Office of Vice President for Administrative Attairs UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI July 9, 1990 coumtY> MIovN$1$

Telephone (314) 682 3611 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Mail Station Pl-137 Washington, DC 20555 ATTENTION: Document Control Desk REFERENCE Docket 50-123 University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor License R-79 SUBJECT. Statement of intent as required by 10CFR50.75 assuring that funds for decommissioning will be obtained when necessary.

Dear Sir:

The Curators of the University of Missouri, a state government entity, as holders of license R-79 for the University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor (UMRR), submit this statement of intent as the mechanism that provides reasonable assuranco that funds will be available to decommission the UMRR when necessary. In conformance with 10CFR50.75(e)(2)(iv), this statement of intent assures that the University of Missouri will request appropriation of funds for decommissioning sufficiently in advance of decommissioning to prevent delay of required activities. .

l The estimate of the total cost of decommissioning is $816,000 with a 25% contingency included. This estimate was developed using information presented in NUREG/CR-1756, decommissioning costs for other research reactor facilities, and engineering estimates.

10CFR50.75(d) specifies that licensees adjust their cost  !

estimates for decommissioning periodically over the life of the facility. The University of Missouri-Rolla will use the decommissioning inflation formula provided in 10CFR50.75(c)(2) or other appropriate method to adjust the decommissioning cost estimate at five year intervals. These cost adjustments will be retained with the decommissioning records required by 10CFR50.75(g)(3).
