Dear Mr. Thomas:
By this letter we would like to officially request that the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission consider extending the expiration date of the license R-79 to operate the University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor to November 22, 1999. The principal reasons for our request are:
- 1. The reactor staff reviews performed for the current license renewal proceedings considered in detail all aspects of operations while updating both the Safety Analysis Report and Technical Specifications.
We also have reviewed and improved our operating procedures and management of the facility. All reviews have shown that the continued operation of the University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor for at least an additional ten years beyond November 22, 1989 can be performed without adverse effects to the health and safety of the general public and the reactor staff.
- 2. The reactor staff and the NRC staff had to expend large amounts of resources on the current license renewal which, as currently projected, will only allow the operation until November 22, 1989. We believe that another similar effort in less than five years would not only be imprudent but also wasteful of our rather limited resources.
