Subject:

Notification of Intent to Comply with new 10 CFR 20

Dear Mr. Bernero:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that pursuant to 10 CFR 20.1008, the Battelle Columbus Laboratories Decommissioning Project (BCLDP) under the Battelle Memorial Institute's License SNM-7 will implement the provisions of the new 10 CFR Part 20, effective June 1,1993. This implementation will affect only the BCLDP, which is currently required to follow both NRC regulations and DOE contractual radiation protection requirements, including DOE Order 5480.11,

" Radiation Protection for Occupational Workers," and DOE Order N 5480.6 " Radiological Control Manual" The NRC license operations for the remainder of the Battelle Memorial Institute will not he implementing the new Part 20 at this time.

We wish to implement the new Part 20 requirements at this time for the BCLDP since this program is under both NRC and DOE radiation protection oversigh:. Implementation would allow consistent application of both sets of radiation protection criteria for the BCLDP since the DOE Orders basically parallel the requirements of the new 10 CFR 20. Where there are significant differences, the BCLDP will evaluate and justify its implementation position.

For technically related questions associated with this notification, please contact Mr. Steve Layendecker, the BCLDP Radiation Protection Manager, at (614) 424-3885.

Very truly yours,

\\(
