Dear Mr. Haughney:

8 In accordance with our license, SNM-7, enclosed are three copies of the latest annual Site Environmental Report for the Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) facilities in Columbus and West Jefferson, Ohio. This report, which has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), describes BMI's environmental activities with respect to our contract with DOE and summarizes the re:;ults of its environmental monitoring program for calendar year 1992.

The report indicates that the DOE-related activities at Battelle are being operated in compliance with DOE and 'other Federal, State, and local environmental requirements. Included in the report is a compliance summary for the period January 1992 through April 1993.

DOE is in the process of closing out its nuclear research contract with BMI. As part of this process, nine buildings at Columbus and six buildings at West Jefferson will be decontaminated to levels allowing use and/or release without any radiological restrictions. Five buildings have been decontaminated and are in the process of being released to Battelle without radiological restrictions.

These activities are planned to continue through 1998 and are covered in DOE's Five-Year Plan for-

Environmental Restoration and Waste Management. The environmental monitoring program will continue until the conclusion of these activities. No significant releases of radioactivity or hazardous chemicals are expected.

Should you have any questions on the report, please call me at (614) 424-4385, or the DOE Project Officer for the Battelle Columbus Laboratories Decommissionin,r Project, Jefferson O. Neff, at (614) 424-3990.
