SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant l Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 MQattde of Isolation Provisions for Service Water (SRW) System

REFERENCE:

(a) Licensee Event Report 89-23, Postulated Pipe Rupture in the Turbine Building Service Water (SRW) System Renders Both Auxiliary Building SRW Subsystems inoperable Gentlemen: ,

in Reference (a) reported out finding that automatic isolation between the safety-related and x-safety related .nortions of the Service Water (SRW) System would occur for a postulated loss of coolant accident" (LOCA), but not for a pipe break caused by a seismic event in respoue' to this finding,' we reported that interim

  • compensatory actions were implemented whice require control room operators to remote I manually isolate the system upon indhation ot a rupture in SRW piping located in the turbine building.

During recent discussions with NRC, we responded to questions concerning the Calvert Cliffs original design basis and provided additional information regarding our long-term :ccrective actions. We indicated that our long-term plaris are to enhance the I system's design by providing automatic isolation of the safety-related SRW portion l upon indication of rupture in the non-safety related portion. You requested that we provide our schedule for implementation of this enhancement. in response to your request, we plan to complete the detailed design for the automatic isolation system upgrade by April 1, 1991. Subject to material availability and final design considerations, installation is projected to be completed during Unit i Refueling Outage No.10, currently planned for spring 1992, and Unit 2 Refueling Outage No. 9, currently planned for fall 1992 Any changes to this completion date will be promptly communicated to you. 3 f
