ENCLOSURE (1)
R EPLY TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION; EDG TECIINICAL SPECIFICATION AMENDMENT INTRODUCTION LWe have reviewed your request for additional information regarding our Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG) Technical Specification Amendment request. The following answers to your questions are provided:
- OUESTIONS o
1.
Did the manufacturer include a 3 month grace period in the annual surveillance intervalc recommended for the EDGs preventative maintenance inspections or did the manufacturer's recommendation rely upon a maximum allowable surveillance -
interval of 12 months and not 15 months?
2.
Was the EDG manufacturer's concurrence with your plan for performing inspections of the EDGs during refueling outages based upon a maximum EDG inspection surveillance interval of 24 months or a maximum-interval of 30 months -
(24 months with a 6 month grace period?).
Resoonse Upon further review, the manufacturer has stated the i 25% grace period does not apply to the new 12 month preventive maintenance. inspections. Additionally, the manufacturer does not. recommend application of the grace period to the 24 month
. EDG inspection surveillance.
l l
The manufacturer provided additional clarification by stating:
1.
The time between the completion of the 24 month inspection and the start of the next 24 month ' inspection should not exceed 24 months.
2.
The annual preventive maintenance inspections should be started no later
(.
than 12 months following the completion of the last 24 month inspection.
1 1
The manufacturer's recommendations will be incorporated into Calvert Cliffs l'
Instructions (CCIs) for preventive maintenance (211) and for surveillance l-testing (104).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION in Reference (c), we committed to completing and approving the riew 12 month Preventive Maintenance procedures (PMs) by April 11, 1990. This date was based on receiving the approved Amendment by April 'll. The PMs are used to schedule the actual maintenance ll procedure that will be used during the inspections.
1 The PMs and. Maintenance Inspection procedure, used to implement this Amendment, were i'
prepared by April II, 1990. Final approval of the procedures will be completed once the EDG' amendment is issued.
