Subject:

Request for Extension of Effective Date of Amendments to License No. R-37 Docket No. 50-20

Dear Mr. Miller:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology hereby requests a 30 day extension of the effective date for implementation of Amendments No. 19 and No. 21 to Facility License No. R-37.

Amendment No. 19, dated March 11, 1982, identifies the most recently approved " Physical Security Plan for the MIT Research Reactor Facility".

Amendment No. 21, dated May 28, 1982, authorizes changes in the storage of fresh fuel. USNRC letter of June 11, 1982 makes the amendments effective 90 days thereafter.

Although the changes necessary to implement the amendments are well underway, it appears now that the contractor responsible for making intrusion alarm changes may not complete the work by September 9th, and the vendor for the special picture badges advises that he cannot ship until mid-September.

For these two reasons an extension of the effective dates for each amendment from 90 days to 120 days after June 11, 1982 is requested.

Your assistance in this regard will be much appreciated. Please contact me if more information is required.

Sincerely, Ce ,

Lincoln Clark, Jr.
