Dear Mrs. Bennington:

This is to inform you that the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory will be making two j shipments of spent fuel from Cambridge, MA to Westinghouse - Savannah River Co. in l Aiken, South Carolina using the route' described in the enclosure. The fuel was used in the MIT Research Reactor and had an original enrichment of 93%.

! This notification is furnished in compliance with NRC regulations of 10 CFR 73.

l A description of shipment as required by the U.S. Department of Transponation in 49 CFR 173.202 and 172.203(d) is also enclosed. Armed escorts will be provided through cities as required and states' governors' designees are being notified.

Dear Ms. Marione:

On June 10,1998, Eric Reber of this office conducted a safety inspection at the above address of activities authorized by the above listed NRC bcense. On July 1,1998, a review of inventory Acuments was performed at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Region I office. The spection was an examination of your licensed activities as they relate to radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's regulations and the license conditions. The inspection consisted of observations by the inspector, interviews with personnel, and a selected examination of representative recoids. The findings of the inspection were discussed with you and Ron Rendano of your organization at the conclusion of the inspection.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were identified.

In accordance with Section 2.700 of the NRC's " Rules and Practices," Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of th;s letter will be placed in the Public Document Room. No reply to this letteris required.
