Director Director of Reactor Operations (617)253- 4 20 2 February 3, 1984 Mr. Cecil 0. Thomas, Chief Standardization and Special Projects Branch Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Subject:

SAR Revision No. 29, License No. R-37, Docket No. 50-20

Dear Mr. Thomas:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology submits herewith Revisicn No. 29 to the " Safety Analysis Report for the MIT Research Reactor (MITR-II)",

Report No, MITNE-ll5 (October 22, 1970), as amended. The purpose of the revision is to change the SAR so that it will comply with changes previously approved for the Technical Specifications of License No. R-37.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 29, 1982, issued Amendc'ent No. 20 to the above license for the purpose of deleting the fabrication tolerances that were stated in Technical Specification No. 5.2-1 in connection with the specified minimum clad thickness of 0.015 inches, and a new nominal minimum of 0.008 inches was specified.

The enclosed SAR pages 3.1-7 and 11.3-3, dated May 6, 1982, have been revised to delete the fabrication tolerances on the fuel dimensions, to indicate that the dimensions are nominal, to add UAlx as a fuel core material (as permitted by the Technical Specifications) and, on p. 11.3-3, to delete the sentence referring to tolerances. The enclosed two pages should be sub-stituted for the corresponding pages dated 9/24/76 and 3/17/72.

The proposed SAR changes have been appre,,ed by the MIT Reactor Safeguards Conmittee.

Sincerely, L a x G w '& ,

LC/sbs Lincoln Clark, Jr.
