's ler. dated >farch 13, 1980 Dear Str. Bernard; In r2sponse to your telephone call of Oct. 9, 1980; I have summarized (attached ) the available radioactive material storage facilities at the >!.I.T.

Reactor. Consideration has been given to the handling, transfer, and storage of the radioactive materials to be received under our referenced request.

The storage capabilities are more than adequate for the safe handling and storage of the materials we plan to receive from other reactors.

Thank you for promptly alerting us to this late question. We would appreciate if you would now expedite approval of our request.

Very truly yours, i -

o Storage Facilities for Radioactive >bterials The SAR Section 3.2.3 (referenced) describes the storage locations at the MIT Reactor.

1. Fuel Storage Facility (SAR 3.2.3.5e)

This is the fuel storage pool and materials packaged in watertight corrosion

, resistant non-buoyant containers may be stored here. The capabilities of this facility is much greater than 10 curies.

2. Reactor Top Fuel Storage The description of these facilities is not in the SAR. The shielding holes were originally used for dry storage of MITR Mark I irradiated fuel elements.

There are 22 holes. The capacity of each hole with the proper plug is

>10' curies.

3. Hot Storage Arec (SAR 3.2.3.5g) 12 - 12" Dia x 24" deep holes are available for storage. Although a low level storage this facility may be used for storage of samples and specimens contained in shielded pigs,
a. First Flcor b'all Storage (SAR 3.2.3-5111) 24 tubes are provided in the containment wall for storage. Six sizes are available from 3" to 16" in Dia and 5'-4" long to S'-4" long. The tubes have shielding plug caps and are capable of storing 10 curies unshielded.
5. Shielded Casks Several shielded casks are available within the reactor facility for transfer and storage of radioactive material. The largest of these is an

" obsolete" spent fuel shipping cask.

Transfers of =aterials from the fuel storage pool (1) and the reactor top dry fuel storage holes (4) may be done with our spent fuel element transfer flask.
