MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY O.K. HARLING 138 Albany Street Cambridge, Mass. 02139 L. CLARK. JR.

Director (617)253- 4211 Director of Reactor Operations July 12, 1984 Regional Administrator, Region I Division of Engineering and Technical Programs United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406 ATTN: Thomas T. Martin, Director Gentlemen:

Subj ect: Appraisal Report No. 50-20/84-01 This letter concerns appraisal report No. 50-20/84-01 which was issued by your staff on 15 June 1984 following an on-site emergency preparedness appraisal during the period 3-6 April 1984. That report inpart requests a written reply within thirty days of the date of the report or 15 July 1984.

Unfortunately, although your report is dated 15 June 1984, we did not receive it until 25 June 1984 and have therefore had only thirteen working days in which to review it. This is insufficient for us to review an appraisal report of such scope. Accordingly, it is requested that an extension of the deadline for the submission of a written reply to 25 July 1984 be granted. This will provide us with a full thirty days from the date of receipt of the report.

Sincerely, s ir & b&%&fy ohn A. Bernard Superintendent, MIT Research Reactor Lincoln Clark, Jr.
