ATTN: Mr. Jon B. Hopkins

Subject:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 Miscellaneous Amendments and Search l Requirements Gentlemen:

In a letter dated October 14, 1987, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) provided a proposed amendment to the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Physical Security Plan and a tentative schedule for implementation of modifications designed to upgrade the location of secondary power supply system components to vital areas. Additional reviews of the modifications currently under development have confirmed that all physical barrier upgrades identified in our submittal can be completed by the end of the fourth refueling outage as addressed in Section 10.4 of the proposed amendment to the Physical Secu'rity Plan. Implementation of these modifications is pending Commission approval of the proposed amendment to the Physical Security Plan.

On November 5, 1987, in a telecon with the reviewer, Mr. Barry Manili, clarifications were provided on various areas of our submittal which is presently under review. As agreed upon during this discussion, SCE&G has provided a revised page 13-3 to the proposed amendment, which now is in total agreement with 10 CFR 73.70(d) in that the reactor control room will be the only exception to the requirements for log maintenance.

The enclosure to this letter contains material of a type specified in 10 CFR 2.790 and must be withheld from public disclosure.
