RIVER BEND STATION, UNIT 1 - TRANSMITTAL OF AUDIT REPORT OF

. LICENSEE PROGRAMS FOR MANAGING COMMITMENTS MADE TO THE NRC (TAC NO. MA0836)

Dear Mr. McGaha:

The enclosed report provides the results of an audit conde.ded by the Office of Nuclear Reactor  ;

Regulation (NRC) of the commitment management program at River Bend Station. The

_ insights gained from the audit at your facility will be used, along with the results from similar audits of seven other licensees' commitment management programs, to determine what, if any, changes to NRC policy or regulations are warranted. In addition, the staff has undertaken discussions with the Nuclear Energy Institute to determine if changes in their guidance document, " Guideline for Managing NRC Commitments," might be mutually beneficial for licensees and the NRC staff. The staff's efforts and recommendations in this area will be presented in reports to the Commission later this year.

We thank your licensing staff and other personnel who participated in the audit for their cooperation. If you have any questions or comments conceming this report or the related efforts to improve NRC and industry guidance in the area of commitment management, please contact David Wigginton at (301) 415-1301 or William Reckley at (301) 415-1314.  ;
