RESOLUTION ENDORSING Ti!E CONVERSION OF Tile SilEARON IIARRIS PLANT TO A NON-NUCLEAR FUEL PLANT AND EXPRESSING Tile OPPOSITION OF Tile CITY COUNCIL TO Tile LICENSING OR OPERATION OF SAID SilEARON HARRIS PLANT Wi!EREAS, the City Council of the City of Durham opposes the movement of nuclear fuel into our region, the licensing and loading of the Shearon liarris reactor, and the activation and operation of the Shearon liarris reactor, WilEREAS, emergency planning for the Shearon liarris plant does not appear adequate to protect the citizens of the City of Durham, and the City of Durham is not included in the evacuation plan for a nuclear power accident at Shearon liarris, WilEREAS, the City of Durham does not receive any regular power supply from the Shearon llarris facility and does not receive significant benefits from the plant, WilEREAS, the Shearon liarris plant is located within 25 miles of Durham's City limits and within a short distance of several major population contors in contral North CaroHna; NOW TilEREFORE DE IT RESOLVED BY Tile CITY COUNCIL OF T!!E CITY OF DURilAM that the City Council endorses converting the Shearon llarris plant to a non-nuclear fuel plant to prevent the production of nuc1 car waste und to avoid a nuclear power accident occuring in the Triangle area.
Further, the City of Durham opposes the licensing or operation of the Shearon
!!arris Nuclear reactor.
Tids resolution is effective upon adoption.
