Q, V LER No.: 50-366/1981-028 Licensee: Georgia Power Company facility: Edwin 1. Hatch Docket No. : 50-366 Narrative Report for LER 50-366/1981-028 On April 7,1981, while in a steady state of operation at 2432 MWt, it was discovered, during a' battery inspection, that the electroly e. level-in one cell of the 2R42-S002A, Diesel Generator Battery, was above the high level mark and that the electrolyte level in some cells were below the lou level j mark. - Tech Specs 4.8.1.1.3.b.3 requires the level to be maintained between the low and high level marks. On April 10, 1981, with reactor power at 2121 MlIt, some cells of the 2R42-5001A and "B" Station Satteries were found to have the electrolyte above the high level marks. These battery cells are also required to have the electrolyte level between the low and high . level marks per Tech Specs 4.8.2.3.2.b.3. In-each event the electrolyte-level' in the affected battery cells was corrected. Plant operation and public health and safety was not affected by either incident. This is a non-repetitive event.

The cause of this event has been attributed to personnel error and-procedural

~

inadequacies. The responsible personnel were counseled as to the importance of maintaining the electrolyte level between the low and high level marks and the battery _ procedures are being. revised to place more' emphasis on the electrolyte level.

Because batteries are generic to both units, the electrolyte level in all batteries was checked. The battery procedures on the other unit are also being revised.
