Nuclear Operations OCT - 1 1987 NLR-N87183 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

CONFIRMATION OF WAIVER OF REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICAL EXAMINATION SALEM AND HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATIONS DOCKET NOS. 50-272, 50-311 AND 50-354 In accordance with understandings reached between Mr. William Kushner of Region I, Mr. Barry Manili of NRR and Mr. Dan Renwick of my staff, this letter provides formal notification that the Armed Response Force class, trained during the week of September 21, 1987, has not had a physical examination within 30 days of their physical fitness qualification as required by 10CFR73, Appendix B, paragraph I.e. As discussed with Messrs., Kushner and Manili, this is due to operational necessity and other factors including saturation of the Medical Department with outage physicals and a change to the New Jersey law regarding weapons permits. Each member of the September 21, 1987 Armed Response Force class has had a physical within the past year and will receive another physical as soon as practicable.

Sincerely,
