SUBJECT:

Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412 Linear Indications in Gib Gusset Welds in Reactor Vessel Structural Support (Neutron Shield Tank)

Significant Deficienty 80-03 Interim Reoort No. 3 Gentlemen:

This letter constitutes our " Interim Report No. 3" on the above subject, and has been generated to advise you of our decision to have the Structural Support repaired at an of f-site facility. The facility selected is the Mt.

Vernon, Indiana, plant of the Babcock and Wilcox Company. Our decision was made on November 28, 1980, and Mr. Mattia was advised of our intent by telephone conversation on December 2,1960, Subsequent to this initial telephoned advice, Mr. Mattia was advised of our scheduled dates of movement in the presence of Mr. Varela, who was performing an unannounced routine inspection on December 4, 1980. The scheduled date for moving the Structural Support from its existing storage position to the barge was given as December 7,1980, and this has now been accomplished. The scheduled date for the start of the movement of the barge and the vessel to Babcock and Wilcox was given as December 10, 1980, and this was accomplished on December 9,1980.

The repair work is as described in our Specification 2BVS-45, dated October 10, 1980, and an uncontrolled copy of this Specification has been transmitted to Mr. Mattia via Mr. Varela in order that your office may establish the scope of the work involved and perform any initial review required. It is possible that the Specification, although fully approved, could be subject to a later revision.
