The following notitication report la being submitted under 10 CFR . Part 21. Thin innuo concerno Crosby opring relief valve failures experienced during tecting at Beaver Valley Unit 1.

The Baron Injection Tank Relief Valvo (BVPS Mark 11 0 .

RV-SI-857) providen overprennure rel.luf capabil .ity for the ik;ron Injection Tank. Information on the Relief Valve in an follown:

Mfg: Crouby Valve & Gage Co.

.Model 110: 50913M6 Style: JMAK-SPEC Mfg. Code: C710 Cronby Type: Globe Size: 3/4 inch The subject valve failed when the valve prenaturely lifted on two (2) separate occaajons during testing, both due to apring failures an a result of the spring material. The first failure occurred during the uixth refueling ot. tag e (6R) and the second failure occurred during the seventh refueling outago (7H). Jn correspondence with the vendor, it was learned that the recommended spr.ing material for thin valve van changed from the original carbon steel to stainless steel, and then to the present alloy steel ASTM-A638 grade 660,

, conditions, llowevo r, it was demonstrated during two actual SI events (LURG 88-007 and 89-007) that the rollof valvo perf ormed satisfactorily (i.e., did not lift prematurely). Thouc events occurrod during- the timo framu between the first and second tout L - f ailures of RV-SI-857 (6R and 7R tonting periods). After tho second tent failure of the rolsof valvo, the upring wan changed to the presently installed ASTM-A638 grade 660 and no additional fa11uros have been experienced. l l
