nARPATI'!E REPCRT G~org:, Power Cerany Plant . I. Hatch Baxli;, Georgia 3!513 Repo rtable Occurrence Report t'o. 50-321/1980-018 at 19C1 CST on 2-7-80, a low nressure alarm was received on HCU accumulator 42-22. Uoon investigatien it was discovered that the accumulator would not hold a nitrocen charge due to a leaking cartridge valve (EP 111) on the ac-cu.uiator nitrogen charging mechanism.

Tech Snecs section 3.3.B.'.4 states that at least 4 operable control rods must separate any 2 inoperabi'e ones. If this cannot be met, the unit must be brought to cold shutdown within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
. Control rod 34-27 had been inoperable by Tech Specs since 1-30-80, due to a charging water valve which

'

',t coen and which must he repaired in cold shutdown.

2_ : ~ J ' T "n :-7-E]. tne cartricce valve was replaced, and the accumulator cn i r' o n tn nitrocen. Inis fulfilled the Tech Specs requirements, and shut-

.

m o not necessary.

U n s

2:::ination, tne valve failure was determined to have been caused by ey.cm-i/e packing wear. This event is neither a repetitive nor a generic occur 2nce. ' n i c 2 was unaf fected. The unit is now in full compliance, u

and no furtner reporting is required.
