Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, New York 12181 March 1, 1979 Director Division of Reactor Licensing United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20545 Re: Facility License CX-22 Docket 50-225 Report of Tests and Experiments
Dear Sir:
As required by Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations sections 50.59, we hereby submit this report of tests and experiments conducted under our Facility License CX-22 for the report period March 1, 1978 to March 1, 1979.
The fuel plates used comprised a core loading of 182 Type 1 stationary plates and 32 Type 1 control rod plates. The remaining plates are stored in the fuel vault. These fuel plates are covered under contract AT(30-1)-3623 Appendix A Items 29 and 31.
From March 1, 1978 to May 12, 1978, the Critical Reactor Facility was used exten-sively to conduct a graduate level course on reactor experiments for 31 students.
Two additional students were involved in project work at the facility to satisfy degree requirements.
Due to the sudden death of Mr. L. David Walthousen on May 18, 1978 the Reactor Facility was inactive until January of this year. Mr. Walthousen's duties were assumed by Mr. Peter R. Nelson on August 21, 1978.
Routine scheduled maintenance was performed in January in preparation for a con-tinuation of the core reconfiguration project started in the fall of 1977. Work on the neutron activation analysis project reported last year was also resumed.

The Critical Reactor Laboratory course was started in late January of this year and project work is continuing. There are currently 30 students enrolled in the course and 5 students working on the two projects mentioned.
The experiments, operations, and topics covered in association with the use of the facility remain the same as described in previous reports.
All activities and experiments have been conducted in accordance with our NRC reactor license CX-22. There have been no changes to our Technical Specifications and our activities did not involve any unreviewed safety questions.
No reports have been published on the activities at the Critical Facility during the report period.
