A routine, announced, safety inspection of your emergency preparedness p%rcua

was car. ducted by Mr. C. A' nato of this office on May 18-19, 1989 at the

Rensselaer Reactor Critical Facility, , New York and the Rensselaer

Campus, Troy, New York. Discussions of our f s were held by Mr. Amato with

your staff and other members of Rensselaer's Administration ~at the conclusion of

the inspection. A follow-up telephone call was placed on July 5, 1989 to

detennine the status of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's corrective actions.

Areas examined durity this inspection are described in the NRC Region I

inspection report which is enclosed. Within these areas, the inspection

consisted of selective examinations of procedures a M representative records,

interviews with personnel aM observations of the inspector.

Within the swpe of this inspection, no violations were identified. No reply to
