EXAMINATION REPORT NO. 50-225/88-01(0L)
During the week of May 23, 1988, the NRC administered an examination to an
employee of Rensselaer Polytechic Institute who had applied for a license to
operate the RPI Critical Facility. Based on the results of the examination a
proposed denial was issued. Details of the examination are described in the
NRC Region I Examination Report which is enclosed with this letter.
The results of the examination and the preparation of two applicants who did
not take the examination indicate that the individuals scheduled for the
examinations did not possess adequate experience nor had they received adequate
training to safely operate the RPI Critical Facility. You are requested to
describe, within 30 days, what steps will be taken to assure future license
applicants will possess adequate experience and will receive sufficient plant
specific training to safely operate the RPI Critical Facility.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790, a copy of this letter and the enclosure will
be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
The response requested by this letter is not subject to the clearance
procedures of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the Paperwork
Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511.
