January 25, 2010 Mr. Jon Franke, Vice President Crystal River Nuclear Plant (NA1B) ATTN: Supervisor, Licensing & Regulatory Programs 15760 W. Power Line Street Crystal River, Florida 34428-6708

SUBJECT:

REVISED REVIEW SCHEDULE REGARDING THE APPLICATION FROM FLORIDA POWER CORPORATION FOR RENEWAL OF THE OPERATING LICENSE FOR CRYSTAL RIVER UNIT 3 NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT (TAC NOS. ME0274 AND ME0278)

Dear Mr. Franke:

By letter dated December 16, 2008, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) received the Florida Power Corporation application for renewal of Operating License No. DPR-72 for Crystal River Unit 3 Nuclear Generating Plant (CR-3), in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 54.17. By letter dated May 22, 2009 (ADAMS Accession No. ML091200415), the staff issued a proposed schedule for the review of the CR-3 license renewal application.

During the most recent scheduled refueling outage at CR-3, a gap in the containment structure was noticed. The analysis of that gap is ongoing. Consequently, the NRC staff is revising the license renewal schedule so that a thorough analysis of the containment structure can be completed. The enclosed schedule may be modified if the resolution of the containment issue does not support the proposed schedule.

If you have any questions, please contact Project Managers Mr. Robert Kuntz by telephone at 301-415-3733 or by email at Robert.Kuntz@nrc.gov or Ms. Elaine Keegan by telephone at 301- 415-8517 or by email at Elaine.Keegan@nrc.gov, for the review of the CR-3 license renewal application.

Sincerely,

/RA/ David J. Wrona, Chief Projects Branch 2 Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
