MONTHLY NARRATIVE" REPORT

'0F OPERATION AND MAJOR MAINTENANCE EXPERIENCE This report describes the operating and major maintenance experienca for the month of May, 1986. This narrative report was prepared by the plant staff and is submitted in accordance with Section 6.9.1.7 of the Units 1 arid 2 Technical Specifications.

On May 6,1986 Unit 2 experienced a turbine runback to 20% power due to the failure of stator cooling water pump 2-1. Unit 2 ramped up to and held at 50% power while inspecting condenser water ooxes.

On May 7,1986 Unit 2 returned to 100% power.

On May 7, 1986 An Unusual Event was declared upon issuance of a tsunami warning.

On May 18,1986 Unit 2 reduced power to 70% to allow surveill'nce a testing of main steam isolation valves and retu, rned to 100% power.

On May 19, 1986 Unit 2 reduced power to 50% while plugging leaking main condenser tubes and returned to 100% power.

On May 25, 1986 Unit 2 reduced power to 50% and operated at various power levels between 50% and 95% the rest of the month while attempting to locate leaking main condenser tubes.

Unit 1 operated this month with a unit availability factor of 100 percent and unit capacity factor of 100 percent. During the month of May, Unit I never reduced power below 80 percent power.

Unit 2 operated this month with a unit availability factor of 100 percent a unit capacity factor of 89.3 percent. Before May 25, Unit 2 experienced three power reductions; once for surveillance testing, once to plug leaking main condenser tubes and once as the result of an automatic turbine runback. In addition, Unit 2 operated between May 25 and June 1 at various power levels between 50 percent and 95 percent while searching for an inten.iittent condenser tube leak.

No challenges to the steam generator safety valves or pressurizer power operated relief valves have been made. Major maintenance performed included the replacement of the rotating assembly on Auxiliary Feedwater Pump 2-1 due to a seized thrust bearing. In addition, during the Unit 2 power curtailments (May 25-31) work was begun on modifications to the Unit 2 high Pressure Turbine Pilot Trip Valves.
