l l- MONTHLY NARRATIVE REPORT l OF OPERATION AND MAJOR MAINTENANCE EXPERIENCE This report describes the operating and major maintenance experience for the month of July, 1987. This narrative report was prepared by the plant staff and is submitted in accordance with Section 6.9.1.7 of the Units 1 and 2 Technical Specifications.

On July 1, 1987 Unit I started the month at 100% power.

Unit 2 started the month shutdown for a refueling outage. A 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(ii) 4-Hour Non-Emergency Report was made regarding a low low level in steam generator 2-2 causing an auto start of auxiliary feedwater pumps 2-2 and 2-3.

On July 2, 1987 Unit 2 entered Mode 4.

l On July 4, 1987 Unit 2 entered Mode 3.

On July 7, 1987 A 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(ii) 4-Hour Non-Emergency Report was made concerning the Unit 2 fuel handling building ventilation system going into iodine removal mode.

On July 11, 1987 Unit 2 entered Mode 2.

On July 14, 1987 Unit 2 entered Mode 1.

Unit 2 entered Mode 2 when it experienced a turbine trip and feedwater isolation due to difficulties with f

controlling main feedwater.

A 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(ii) 4-Hour Non-Emergency Report was l made regarding a high high steam generator level on j Unit 2 causing a turbine trip and feedwater isolation. j 1

Unit 2 entered Mode 1.

Unit 2 entered Mode 2 when the turbine was manually tripped due to difficulties with controlling main feedwater.

Unit 2 entered Mode 1. l l

Unit 2 synchronized to the PGandE system.

Unit 2 experienced a turbine trip and reactor trip due to high steam generator level. An Unusual Event was )

declared when Unit 2 experienced a safety injection due j to high steam flow and low steen line pressure. Unit 2 '

entered Mode 3. Additional information concerning this event may be found in the Unit Shutdowns section.

On July 17 1987 Unit 2 entered Mode 2. Unit 2 entered Mode 1 and synchronized to the PGar:JE system.

l MD.RPT l

__ o

I On July 18, 1987 Unit 2 disconnected from the PGandE system to perform a turbine overspeed trip test. Unit 2 then synchronized to the PGandE system.

On July 25, 1987 Unit 1 decreased power to 50% to backwash condenser waterboxes.

On July 26, 1987 Unit I returned to full power.

On July 29, 1987 Unit I decreased power to 55% to search for leaking condenser tubes.  !

On July 30, 1987 Unit I returned to full power.

On July 31, 1987 Unit 1 ended the month at 100% power. Unit 2 ended the month at 100% power.

Summary of Plant Operating Characteristics Power Reductions and Unit Shutdowns Unit 1 operated this month with a unit availability factor of 100% and a unit capacity factor of 97.9%. Unit 1 reduced power twice this month, once to back flush condenser waterboxes and once to search for leaking condenser tubes.

Unit 2 operated this month with a unit availability factor of 44.1% and a unit capacity factor of 23.1%. Unit 2 synchronized to the PGandE system on July 14 ending the cycle 1 refueling outage. Unit 2 tripped once this month on high steam generator water level and was removed from the PGandE system once for turbine overspeed trip testing.

Summary of Significant Safety Related Maintenance Significant safety related maintenance for Unit 2 consisted of:

o Completion of the first refueling outage. In addition to normal plant recovery activities, repairs to the flux thimble high pressure seals were made when leakage was detected while raising reactor coolant pressure. Minor leaks remain at full reactor coolant pressure which are not significant enough to impact unit operation.

Actuations of Steam Generator Safety Valves or Pressurizer Power Operated Relief Valves No challenges to the steam generator safety valves or pressurizer power operated relief valves were made.

Major changes to the,Radwaste Treatment Systems No major changes to the radwaste treatment systems as required by Technical Specification 6.15.1. were made.
